Devold Merino Base Layers

Natural merino wool performance for hiking, trekking, skiing, travel and everyday outdoor life.

A good base layer is the foundation of an effective outdoor clothing system. Worn next to the skin, it helps manage moisture and temperature while providing a comfortable layer of warmth without unnecessary bulk.

At Hit The Trail, our Devold merino base layer collection brings together some of the Norwegian brand's most versatile wool layers, from lightweight Breeze Merino 150 through warmer Breeze Plus Merino 200 and the expedition-tested Expedition Merino 235.

Made with the natural performance of merino wool at their core, Devold base layers are designed for everything from everyday outdoor activity and hiking to skiing, trekking and colder adventures.

Why Choose a Merino Wool Base Layer?

Merino wool is one of nature's most versatile fibres, which makes it particularly well suited to clothing worn next to the skin.

Unlike a conventional synthetic base layer, merino wool naturally helps regulate body temperature. It can absorb and manage moisture vapour while continuing to provide insulation, helping you stay comfortable as activity levels and weather conditions change.

Wool also has natural odour-resistant properties, meaning merino garments can often be worn repeatedly before they need washing. This makes them particularly useful for travelling, multi-day adventures and outdoor activities where packing light matters.

Devold describes wool as nature's high-tech fibre because it can regulate temperature, manage moisture and keep you warm even when wet.

Choosing the Right Devold
Merino Base Layer

The weight of a merino garment is an important consideration when choosing a base layer. Our current Devold collection includes three distinct weights, giving you options for different conditions and activities.

Devold Breeze Merino 150

Lightweight, soft and versatile merino for year-round use.

Devold Breeze 150 is the lightest merino layer in our current collection. Made from 100% merino wool at 150 g/m², it is designed to be lightweight and comfortable against the skin.

The fine 17.5-micron merino fibres used in Breeze help create a particularly soft feel, while the natural properties of wool help regulate temperature and manage moisture.

Breeze is an excellent choice when you want a lightweight first layer for hiking, trekking, travel and everyday outdoor activity. It can also be worn on its own in warmer conditions or underneath additional layers when temperatures fall.

Our opening collection includes the Devold Breeze Merino 150 Headover, providing lightweight merino protection around the neck and face as part of a flexible layering system.

Devold Breeze Plus Merino 200

The familiar softness of Breeze with additional warmth.

For cooler conditions, Devold Breeze Plus Merino 200 increases the weight to 200 g/m² while retaining the soft, comfortable feel that makes the Breeze family so versatile.

The collection is made from 100% merino wool and offers a little more warmth and substance than the lightweight 150-weight Breeze. Devold positions Breeze Plus for activities including hiking and trekking, running, cross-country skiing and everyday activewear.

Our current collection includes:

  • Breeze Plus Merino 200 Longs

  • Breeze Plus Merino 200 T-Shirt

  • Breeze Plus Merino 200 Shirt

This makes Breeze Plus particularly useful when you want a versatile merino layer that can work across a wider range of cooler conditions.

Whether worn directly against the skin or incorporated into a wider layering system, Breeze Plus provides natural warmth without the weight and bulk of a much heavier winter base layer.

Devold Expedition Merino 235

Heavyweight merino insulation for colder conditions.

At the warmest end of our current Devold base layer collection is Expedition Merino 235.

Developed for demanding conditions and tested on polar expeditions, Expedition is a two-layer wool base layer designed to provide exceptional insulation when temperatures drop.

The Expedition Merino 235 Longs use a two-layer construction, with soft merino wool against the skin and an outer layer incorporating Aquaduct-treated merino to help transport moisture away from the body. Devold combines the outer merino with polyamide to increase durability. The garment weighs 235 g/m², making it considerably warmer than the Breeze and Breeze Plus layers.

Our opening collection includes the Devold Expedition Merino 235 Longs, making it an excellent choice for cold-weather hiking, trekking, skiing and other activities where dependable insulation is essential.

You don't have to be heading on a polar expedition to benefit from Expedition. For anyone who feels the cold or spends extended periods outdoors in winter conditions, a heavier merino base layer can make a significant difference to comfort.

Merino Wool for Skiing & Winter Adventures

A good base layer is particularly important when skiing and enjoying other winter activities.

Merino wool provides a comfortable first layer beneath your mid-layer and outer clothing, helping manage moisture while providing natural insulation. Devold's heavier Expedition collection has been developed specifically with demanding cold-weather use in mind and is recommended by Devold for activities including skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking and trekking.

For less extreme winter conditions, Breeze and Breeze Plus offer lighter alternatives that can be combined with additional layers depending on the weather and your activity level.

Devold Merino Base Layers for Hiking & Trekking

Merino base layers are particularly well suited to hiking and trekking because they can adapt to changing levels of activity.

When climbing a hill or walking at a faster pace, moisture management and breathability become important. When stopping for a rest or reaching a colder, exposed section of trail, insulation becomes more important.

A merino base layer helps provide a comfortable foundation throughout those changes.

For lighter and more active conditions, Breeze Merino 150 offers a lightweight first layer. As temperatures fall, Breeze Plus 200 provides additional warmth, while Expedition 235 is designed for the coldest conditions in our current collection.

This makes it possible to choose your base layer according to the conditions rather than relying on one weight for every adventure.

Why Merino Works for Travel

Merino is also an excellent choice for travelling.

Its natural resistance to odour means wool garments can often be worn more than once before washing, while the ability to regulate temperature makes merino useful across changing climates.

A lightweight Breeze layer can be particularly useful when travelling because it takes up little space in a bag and can be worn in a variety of conditions. Heavier Breeze Plus or Expedition layers can then provide additional warmth when travelling somewhere colder.

Devold recommends washing wool less frequently and notes that garments can often be refreshed simply by airing them, helping reduce unnecessary washing while also extending garment life.

Understanding Merino Weight

When choosing a merino base layer, you'll often see a number such as 150, 200 or 235 g/m².

This refers to the weight of the fabric per square metre and provides a useful indication of how substantial the garment is.

150 g/m² – Lightweight
Devold Breeze 150 is light, breathable and particularly versatile for warmer conditions, active use and year-round layering.

200 g/m² – Midweight
Devold Breeze Plus 200 adds warmth and substance while remaining soft and versatile for outdoor activities and everyday wear.

235 g/m² – Heavyweight
Devold Expedition 235 provides a much warmer layer for colder conditions and demanding outdoor use.

The right choice depends on the conditions, activity level and the rest of your clothing system.
