Devold – Norwegian Wool & Merino Clothing
Norwegian wool craftsmanship since 1853, from traditional wool sweaters to high-performance merino base layers.
At Hit The Trail, we are pleased to introduce Devold of Norway, a brand with more than 170 years of experience creating wool clothing for life outdoors. Founded on the west coast of Norway in 1853, Devold began making knitted wool clothing for fishermen and working communities who needed dependable protection from the harsh Norwegian climate.

More than 170 years later, wool remains at the heart of Devold. The brand combines traditional Norwegian wool craftsmanship with modern merino technology to create clothing designed for hiking, trekking, skiing, travel, outdoor adventures and everyday life in colder conditions.

Our opening Devold collection brings together traditional wool sweaters, technical merino base layers, wool socks and cold-weather accessories, giving you a carefully selected introduction to one of Norway's best-known wool clothing specialists.
Discover Devold at Hit The Trail
Devold has a particularly strong heritage in wool, but its modern collection covers much more than traditional knitwear.

From lightweight merino worn next to the skin to warm Norwegian wool sweaters and practical wool accessories, Devold offers different ways to use one of nature's most versatile performance fibres.

At Hit The Trail, our initial collection focuses on three key areas:
Devold Wool Sweaters
Traditional Norwegian wool design meets modern outdoor clothing.

Our collection includes the Nordsjø Wool Sweater, Original Islender Wool Sweater, Nansen Legacy Sweater and Svalbard Wool High Neck.

These distinctive sweaters reflect Devold's long association with Norwegian wool clothing, combining natural warmth with timeless designs that work beautifully outdoors and in everyday life.

Why Wool?
Wool has been used for outdoor clothing for centuries, and there is a good reason it has remained relevant.

Merino wool combines a number of natural properties that make it particularly effective for outdoor clothing. It can help regulate body temperature, manage moisture and retain warmth when damp, while also offering natural resistance to odours.

For active use, this makes wool particularly useful as a base-layer material. For colder conditions, wool's natural insulation makes it an excellent choice for sweaters, socks, hats and other warm layers.
Unlike many synthetic performance fabrics, wool is a natural fibre with inherent performance characteristics.

For Devold, this isn't a recent trend. Wool has been central to the company since it was founded in 1853.
Norwegian Wool Heritage Since 1853
Devold's story began with Ole Andreas Devold, who returned to Norway from Germany with knitting machinery and established his textile business on the west coast of Norway in 1853.
The harsh climate of the region provided a natural testing ground for wool clothing. Devold initially produced garments for fishermen and workers who depended on warm, durable clothing to protect them from cold and wet conditions.
Over the generations, Devold's wool clothing became associated with Norwegian outdoor life and exploration, including expeditions to some of the world's most challenging environments.
That heritage remains an important part of the brand today.
Devold isn't simply a modern outdoor company that has discovered wool. Wool has been at the centre of Devold's expertise for more than 170 years.
From Sheep to Shop
Devold's commitment to wool extends beyond the finished garment.

Through its Sheep to Shop approach, Devold works directly with wool growers and has developed greater control and traceability across the journey from raw wool to finished clothing.

The company also operates its own manufacturing facility in Lithuania, where Devold garments are knitted, sewn and quality checked.

This level of involvement in the supply chain is an important part of Devold's approach to quality and helps maintain control over how its wool products are made.

From Norwegian wool heritage to modern manufacturing, Devold remains closely connected to the material at the heart of the brand.
Devold Merino for Outdoor Life
Merino wool isn't just for extreme expeditions.
Its versatility makes it an excellent choice for everyday outdoor activities, from walking and hiking to trekking, skiing, travelling and camping.

A lightweight merino layer can provide comfortable temperature regulation during active days, while a heavier merino base layer can provide additional warmth when conditions become colder.

The same natural properties also make merino particularly useful when travelling, where odour resistance and the ability to wear wool repeatedly can be real advantages.

With Breeze, Breeze Plus and Expedition Merino represented in our opening collection, Hit The Trail's Devold range provides a starting point for building a wool-based layering system suited to different conditions.
Traditional Wool Sweaters for Modern Outdoor Life
Devold's wool sweaters offer something different from technical base layers.

The Nordsjø, Original Islender, Nansen Legacy and Svalbard bring together Norwegian-inspired design and the natural warmth of wool in garments that can move easily between outdoor adventures and everyday life.

These are sweaters with genuine heritage behind them, rather than designs simply inspired by the outdoors.

Whether worn over a merino base layer on a cold day, around a campsite or as an everyday winter sweater, Devold wool knitwear brings natural warmth and distinctive Norwegian character to your wardrobe.
