Fjällräven Kajka X-Lätt 45 Review: A New Era of Lightweight Trekking?

When Fjällräven releases a new trekking backpack, people tend to take notice.

The Swedish outdoor brand has built a reputation for creating equipment that prioritises durability, comfort and reliability over fleeting trends. For years, the Kajka series has been a favourite among long-distance hikers and backpackers who need a pack capable of carrying serious loads in demanding environments.

Now Fjällräven has introduced something a little different: the Kajka X-Lätt 45.

Designed to offer the perfect balance between durability, functionality and lower weight, this new pack brings a fresh approach to trekking without losing the qualities that made the Kajka name so respected in the first place.

What Does "X-Lätt" Mean?

The "X" in Kajka X-Lätt stands for product exploration.

According to Fjällräven, the design team set out to answer a simple question: how light can a trekking backpack become while still retaining the durability, comfort and repairability that hikers expect from the brand?

The result is the Kajka X-Lätt 45, a 45-litre trekking pack weighing just over 1kg while maintaining many of the features that have made the traditional Kajka range so popular. It sits neatly between heavier expedition-style backpacks and the increasingly popular ultralight category.

Built for Real Adventures

One of the most interesting aspects of the Kajka X-Lätt 45 is that Fjällräven hasn't simply removed features to save weight.

The pack still uses the brand's distinctive birch wood frame system, providing excellent load transfer and carrying comfort. The fully adjustable back system allows the pack to be adapted to a wide range of body shapes, while stretch side pockets, a removable front pocket sleeve and a detachable internal pocket add versatility on the trail.

The 45-litre capacity makes it particularly appealing for:

  • Multi-day hiking trips

  • Lightweight backpacking adventures

  • Weekend wild camping trips

  • Long-distance trails where every gram matters

For many hikers, 45 litres represents a sweet spot between carrying comfort and packing discipline.

Sustainability Still Matters

As with much of Fjällräven's equipment, sustainability remains an important part of the design.

The Kajka X-Lätt 45 is made using durable Vinylon F fabric alongside recycled polyamide components and is produced without PFAS. Rather than creating a backpack that is simply lightweight, Fjällräven's goal was to create one that would remain useful and repairable for many years of adventure.

In an era where many outdoor products are designed for short lifecycles, that philosophy is refreshing.

My First Impressions

Having spent time with the Kajka X-Lätt 45, what immediately stands out is how well Fjällräven has balanced weight reduction with practicality.

Many lightweight packs achieve their low weight by sacrificing comfort, support or durability. The X-Lätt feels different. It still feels like a serious trekking backpack, just without the bulk often associated with traditional load-hauling packs.

The adjustable carry system, thoughtful storage options and quality materials give it a reassuring feel that many experienced hikers will appreciate.

If you'd like a closer look at the pack, I've put together a full video review where I walk through the features, fit, storage options and my overall impressions after spending time with it.

The video gives a much better feel for the pack than photos alone and may help you decide whether it's the right choice for your next adventure.

Is the Kajka X-Lätt 45 Right for You?

If you're an ultralight purist counting every gram, there are certainly lighter options available.

However, if you want a backpack that combines lightweight performance with excellent carrying comfort, robust construction and the trusted design heritage of Fjällräven, the Kajka X-Lätt 45 deserves serious consideration.

It feels like a natural evolution of the Kajka concept — lighter, more streamlined and ready for modern backpacking adventures without abandoning the qualities that made the original such a success.

For hikers looking to reduce pack weight without compromising on comfort or durability, this could be one of the most interesting new trekking packs of the year.
